A Living Eden

A Clan’s Sacred Bird

The totem of one Nyoro clan is a small bird that warned their founder of a charging buffalo, saving his life. The Nile’s Power

Tree‑Climbing Lions of Ishasha

In the remote Ishasha sector, lions routinely climb large fig trees and sprawl across branches. Locals believe they do so to gain a hunting advantage, scanning the plains for Uganda kob. This rare behaviour, shared with only a few other populations in Africa, is a photographer’s dream.

The Dwarf Mongoose Birth‑Control Study

Between 1997 and 2000, researcher Jason Gilchrist conducted his PhD in Queen Elizabeth National Park and unveiled the complex birth regulations of dwarf mongooses. His work revealed how dominant females suppress reproduction in subordinates — a groundbreaking study that shaped our global understanding of cooperative breeding.

The Ruwenzori: Where Jesus Learned to Walk on Water

Towering behind the park, the snow‑capped Ruwenzori Mountains are so wet and misty that a famous guidebook quipped: “Jesus came here to learn to walk on water. After five days anyone could do it.” The surreal alpine moorlands and equatorial glaciers add a mystical dimension to any visit.

Chimpanzees That Self‑Medicate

In Kibale, researchers have observed chimpanzees deliberately eating the bark of the sycamore fig tree. Laboratory tests confirm that compounds in the leaves and bark are effective against bacteria, parasites, and even tumours. This remarkable self‑medication behaviour blurs the line between instinct and rudimentary medicine.

13 Primate Species in One Forest

Beyond the famous chimpanzee tracking, Kibale hosts red colobus, black‑and‑white colobus, L’Hoest’s monkeys, and the rare Uganda mangabey. Nowhere else in Africa can you encounter so many primates in a single day.

A Blue Jewel of Tranquility

Bunyonyi means “place of many little birds,” and the lake lives up to its name. With depths exceeding 900 metres, its crystalline water is free of bilharzia and crocodiles — perfectly safe for swimming and canoeing. The 29 islands are steeped in local folklore, from punishment islands to lush terraced gardens.

Clans & Cows: Uganda’s Totemic Heritage

In the surrounding highlands, Banyoro and Bahima clans carry names drawn from cattle parts — “Striped Cow,” “Cow in Full Milk,” “Tongue,” “Heart.” These totems aren’t worshipped, but respected with a deep, almost familial deference. The same term for “respectful avoidance” applies to both one’s totem and one’s mother‑in‑law, illustrating how intertwined culture and nature remain in western Uganda.

The True Source of the Nile

Although Samuel Baker and his wife Mary “discovered” the source for the Western world in 1868, the Egyptian geographer Claudius Ptolemy correctly identified the Nile’s headwaters in the first century AD. It took 17 more centuries before Baker’s declaration confirmed what Ptolemy had noted. Uganda’s fame in the pre‑colonial world stemmed from this river — the strategic link between Europe and Asia via Egypt.

The Dark Court of King Mutesa

When explorers like Speke and Stanley visited the Kabaka’s palace, they stepped into a world of terrifying contrasts. Mutesa, who ruled from 1860, kept a hundred wives and meted out punishments with chilling casualness — a girl who laughed too loudly had her head chopped off; enemies were burnt alive, dismembered, or buried with their living spouses. Speke presented him with a gun, and Mutesa immediately tested it on a human subject. When a Sudanese guest arrived, 30 people were slaughtered in his honour. On one particularly horrific day, 2,000 victims were tortured and burnt as an offering to his father’s spirit. His successor, Mwanga, would later burn alive 45 Christians — 22 Catholics and 23 Anglicans — who refused to renounce their faith.
